CAFE CULTURE
Chez Julien Enchants with Classic Charm and Delectable Cuisine

A few days ago, on a mission to celebrate a birthday in true Parisian style, we found ourselves at Chez Julien in the heart of the Marais district. This historic brasserie had beckoned for years, and this time, I finally succumbed to its lovely enchantment. The Belle Époque decor, with its warm tones and sophisticated elegance, instantly transported us to another era.
Chef Helmi Derbal oversees the menu, which celebrates fresh, seasonal ingredients... And truffle. Naturally, the truffle focus piqued our interest, and we couldn't resist the Truffle & Comté Cheese Croque Monsieur. Let me tell you, it was, hands down, one of the best croque monsieurs I've ever had in Paris.

Beyond the food, Chez Julien offers a variety of seating options to suit your mood. Soak up the Parisian sun on one of their three terraces, or retreat to the intimate elegance of the private lounge. No matter where you choose to sit, the panoramic views of Ile Saint-Louis add a touch of magic to your meal.
Chez Julien is a place where history and contemporary excellence meet on your plate. With its chic ambiance, strategic location, and expertly crafted menu, it's no wonder this Parisian gem remains a cherished landmark.

Capturing Paris with Photographer Zaman Khan

Photo by Daria - James and Zaman at dinner in Paris
I recently had the pleasure of hanging out with world-renowned photographer Zaman Khan in Paris. We sat down after a delightful dinner. Khan, known for his captivating cityscapes, offered fascinating insights into what drew him to the City of Lights, his unique perspective on capturing a city's soul, and the gems he discovered.
Drawn to the Architecture
Unlike many photographers drawn to the Eiffel Tower's iconic silhouette, Khan was captivated by the city's architecture. "When I started looking at pictures of Paris," he explains, "everyone focused on the Eiffel Tower. But I wanted to dig deeper. I started looking at the streets. Paris has incredible architecture, and that's what truly drew me in."

Seeing Differently Through a Photographer's Lens
Khan describes his approach to photography as "enjoying the resources available, natural or man-made." He sees the heart and soul poured into architecture. "In Paris," he says, "every corner is a masterpiece. It's the architecture that makes you feel. Even on my last day, I feel sad knowing I wouldn't see it every day."
A City of Two Speeds: Old vs. New
Khan acknowledges the beauty in both historic and modern architecture. "There's beauty everywhere," he says. "Even in new, AI-designed buildings. But there's a certain magic to the craftsmanship of older structures." He emphasizes the importance of appreciating each era's unique contribution to a city's aesthetic.

Paris: A City That Embraces Life
Beyond the architecture, Khan was struck by the Parisian way of life. "Everyone is so nice to each other," he says. "Even on the metro, there's a sense of community. People smile, chat, and truly enjoy each other's company. It's a beautiful contrast to the fast-paced anonymity of many other cities."
A Parisian Love Affair: Capturing the Essence
Khan's recent visit included the Pont Alexandre III and the Bir-Hakeim Bridge. "The structure, the vibe—it's pure inspiration," he enthuses. These places gave me such a good feeling. I wanted to capture their beauty and share it with the world."
The Beauty of Human Connection
Khan's love affair with Paris extends beyond its architecture. He finds immense beauty in the simple act of human connection. "We're missing out on so much in this world," he observes. "Seeing people happy together, talking, laughing – that's a blessing. And in Paris, it's everywhere you look."

A Farewell and a Promise to Return
As our conversation wrapped up, Khan expressed his desire to return to Paris, particularly during winter. "The cold weather invigorates me," he says, "and I can't wait to capture the city in a new light."
Zaman Khan's captivating perspective offers a fresh look at Paris's magic. His lens captures the city's architectural beauty, and his heart is inspired by its joie de vivre.
