VISITING PARIS

➡️ FLIGHT ALERT 🚨: I see decent flights to Paris in September and November. The round-trip Nonstop United flights from Newark look appealing - November can be a bit chillier, but you won’t have to deal with summertime crowds. Alternatively, come in September while it’s still warm, and enjoy the complimentary wine on Air France!

“Lately, I've been thinking a lot about the cafés. The sense of community, the comfort... Paris is a city that embraces the act of conversation.”

FLANERIES IN PARIS
The Society of Wallace Fountains: Preserving Parisian History, One Fountain at a Time

Wallace Fountain at the Flower Market near Notre Dame

Did you know Paris has over 100 historic drinking fountains, called Wallace Fountains, scattered throughout the city? Last week, I embarked on a fascinating walking tour with the Society of the Wallace Fountains. This dedicated organization works tirelessly to promote, preserve, and protect these iconic Parisian landmarks. You can see their guided tours HERE.

The tour itself was a wonderful way to discover hidden gems and learn about the history behind these beautiful fountains. Originally, they were donated by Sir Richard Wallace in the 1870s. They not only provided clean drinking water but also served as a symbol of public/private partnership for the common good. Thanks to the Wallace Fountains Society, these historic fountains continue to get the promotion they deserve.

The best part? You can explore these fountains at your own pace! The Society offers a fantastic selection of self-guided walks, or "flâneries," as I call them, that you can download for free on their website, HERE. So, if you're planning a trip to the City of Lights and want to venture beyond the usual tourist spots, consider downloading these walks!

HIDDEN GEMS
La Maroquinerie: Parisian Indie Music Haven

Concert at La Maroquinerie

This week, I finally scratched my live music itch at a hidden gem called La Maroquinerie. Tucked away in MĂ©nilmontant, a neighborhood where we used to live, this spot has been a Parisian institution for over 20 years, championing all things indie music.

What makes La Maroquinerie truly unique is that it’s housed in a former boxing arena. The venue retains a raw, industrial vibe that adds a special edge to the live music experience. The layout itself fosters intimacy, with a capacity of around 500 people and a stage positioned at one end. This closeness to the performers creates an electric atmosphere, making you feel like part of the action.

Beyond the music, La Maroquinerie offers a restaurant open on concert nights and a charming outdoor terrace. It's the perfect spot to grab a drink, soak up the Parisian atmosphere, and unwind before the show. If you're looking for a break from the mainstream and a chance to experience the heart of Parisian indie music, La Maroquinerie is a must-visit.

BOOK RECOMMENDATION
Around and About Paris by Thirza Vallois

I recently started reading Thirza Vallois's "Around and About Paris" on my Kindle while sitting on a bench on the Promenade Plantée. This week's book recommendation comes with a review highlighting why Vallois's work is a must-read for anyone fascinated by Paris.

Review from Library Journal:

Vallois, a 30-year resident of Paris, has written three wonderful volumes about her favorite city. She has spent seven of those years walking down every one of its streets, reading every available book written about it, interviewing old-timers, and then compiling all her research into these three extraordinary books. As each chapter unfolds, the reader walks with Vallois district by district along the streets of Paris, sharing in the art, literature, music, history, politics, science, religion, economics, entertainment, crime, passion, and local color of each unique arrondissement. The scenery changes from the past to the present, bringing Paris alive with tales from lifelong residents. Vallois's in-depth knowledge of the city and her acute attention to detail, delivered with fast-moving style, will be intriguing for both travelers and scholars. Recommended for larger libraries.

FRENCH SONG OF THE WEEK
Mentissa & Vianney - Et Bam

Remember Vianney's performance we shared last week? This week, I wanted to introduce you to another of his duets. Here's a special collaboration with the incredibly talented singer Mentissa. Get ready to be swept away by their voices in "Et Bam" (Arr. Pierre Bertrand-Cagnes) – a performance recorded live for the prestigious Gala des Pièces Jaunes 2023 on France 2. Mentissa's vocals are simply stunning, and together they create a beautiful and energetic performance you won't want to miss!
