Fall has hit Paris in full force, and wow - the city looks incredible right now! The trees are showing off their best golden colors, everyone's breaking out their cozy scarves, and we've lucked out with the perfect autumn weather this week. I've been soaking up every minute of these gorgeous days!

David Turnley Exhibition at Hôtel de Ville

There's a must-see photography exhibition at Hôtel de Ville right now featuring the powerful work of David Turnley. This Pulitzer Prize-winning American photographer, who now resides in Paris, has documented some of history's most pivotal moments. I recently met him at a small cafe in the Marais, and his genuine warmth mirrors the humanity captured in his photographs. The outdoor exhibition, accessible to all, transforms the north side of Hôtel de Ville into a stunning open-air gallery. Don't miss it!

VISITING PARIS

A Hidden Oasis Near the Champs-Élysées - Parc Monceau

If you're staying in Paris's 8th arrondissement or nearby neighborhoods, you might be steps away from one of the city's best-kept secrets without knowing it. While tourists flock to the Champs-Élysées and Place de la Concorde, many miss this enchanting green space just a short walk away. Parc Monceau deserves a spot on your Paris itinerary, offering a peaceful retreat from the neighborhood's luxury boutiques and Haussmann buildings.

Tucked away in one of Paris's most elegant neighborhoods, Parc Monceau has that same laid-back vibe you might find in parts of Central Park - though this gem has been charming Parisians since long before New York's famous park was even a dream. This 18th-century park strikes a perfect balance between manicured French gardens and wild, natural spaces that make you forget you're in the heart of Paris.

Joggers circle the park's winding paths, and children's laughter echoes from the vintage carousel near the main entrance. Unlike many Parisian parks with "keep off the grass" signs, Parc Monceau invites visitors to sprawl on its lawns for picnics or afternoon reading.

The park's romantic landscape features mysterious grottos, classical columns, and a picturesque pond crossed by a Roman-style bridge. Hidden corners burst with untamed vegetation, creating secret gardens within the park. These quiet spots, combined with the grand old trees and wandering pathways, make Parc Monceau a refreshing urban escape for locals and visitors seeking a break from Paris's bustling streets.

PARIS CAFES

Finding Old World Charm at Le Valois 1868

After a morning photographing Parc Monceau, I stopped by Le Valois 1868, a traditional brasserie with an impressive history - its past clientele included artistic giants like Picasso, Matisse, and even François Truffaut. While the prices run a bit high, the classic brasserie atmosphere, with its zinc bar, vintage mirrors, and bow-tied waiters, makes for an authentic Parisian dining experience.

I indulged in their burger (a guilty pleasure) paired with an IPA - both hit the spot. The place gets packed during lunch with the business crowd from this upscale 8th arrondissement neighborhood but maintains its old-world charm. While it might not be the most budget-friendly option in Paris, it offers a taste of traditional brasserie culture in a historic setting.

JOIE DE VIVRE

Transform Your Evenings with a French-Inspired Apéro

The French apéro, short for apéritif, is a cherished pre-dinner ritual that combines drinks, light bites, and socializing. This casual gathering is perfect for unwinding after work or kicking off a weekend with friends. To host your own apéro at home, start by setting the mood with some French music and preparing a variety of small plates or "amuse-bouches" that are easy to share and eat.

For drinks, offer a selection of classic French apéritifs such as Pastis, Kir, or Lillet, alongside some wines and non-alcoholic options. When it comes to food, think simple yet flavorful. Serve a mix of store-bought and homemade items like a charcuterie board with cured meats and cornichons, a variety of cheeses, olives, and crusty bread. Add some homemade touches with quick recipes like gougères (cheese puffs) or a savory cake.

The Kir, one of France's most charming aperitifs, perfectly balances sophistication with sweetness. This ruby-hued drink combines white wine with a splash of crème de cassis (blackcurrant liqueur), creating a refreshing pre-dinner treat. For an extra touch of luxury, try a Kir Royale, where champagne elevates this beloved classic to new heights. It's a delicious taste of French culture that's impossible to resist!

Keep the atmosphere relaxed and convivial. Unlike formal dinner parties, an apéro is all about casual conversation and grazing. Encourage guests to mingle, refill their own drinks, and help themselves to food. The key is to create a laid-back environment where everyone feels comfortable and can enjoy each other's company.

Remember, the essence of an apéro is its simplicity and conviviality. It's not about elaborate preparations or impressing guests with culinary skills. Instead, focus on creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere where good food, drinks, and conversation flow freely. With these elements in place, you'll be well on your way to hosting an authentic French-inspired apéro that your friends will love.

FRENCH SONG OF THE WEEK
Juliette Armanet - L'Indien

This week's French song spotlight falls on "L'Indien" by Juliette Armanet, a love song from her breakthrough album "Petite Amie." With its elegant piano melodies and poetic lyrics about an all-consuming love, this track perfectly showcases Armanet's talent for crafting sophisticated French pop that feels both classic and contemporary.
